I remember.

Crowds surrounding the Reflecting Pool, during...

I was born 20 years ago and could not control what happened before I was born.Even though I was not there, I remember.  I will never take the courage of others before me for granted. They endured things that I will never be able to understand.  I can not imagine being blatantly told that I was not worthy because of the color of my skin, but my parents can. My mother tells me of how she was hidden as a child because her skin was too bright. My father tells me of the day when he was refused a doctor’s appointment because someone else’s health was more important.

Today, I sit and thank god that someone stood up for the future.  As I sit at a college with students of all colors and religions, I think of fights that have not been fought yet. I think of immigrants who struggle to get by in this country. I think of Muslims who are constantly scrutinized in the media.  I think of those who are not yet born. I think of a future way beyond my own. For this very reason, I dedicate myself to helping others.  I will always remember.

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” –George Santayana

Quote of the Day

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.”

Stand and Speak.

Imagine how life would be if someone did not stand ?

Imagine how life would be if someone did not speak?

Would life be the same?

Would it even exist?

These are questions that I ask myself everyday.

I wonder why more people don’t speak.

I wonder why everyone follows the crowd.

I guess it is too much trouble being different.

People laugh because everyone else laughs.

People say what everyone else says.

People are afraid to look weak.

They want to be safe.

People are afraid to look dumb.

They want to be average.

They take advantage of what has been given to them.

They do not understand the world we enjoy today.

The world we enjoy today was built on people being different.

The world we enjoy today was built on people being dangerous.

Where would we be if someone was afraid to look dumb?

Where would be if someone was afraid to be different?

Imagine how life could change if someone stood up.

Imagine how life could change if someone spoke up.

Will life be the same?

Will you make the change?

“Stand upright, speak thy thoughts, declare The truth thou hast, that all may share; Be bold, proclaim it everywhere: They only live who dare. ”
-Voltaire
